Your website may have thousands of visitors per day, but if they are not engaging with your content in the right way, they are actually driving your SEO rankings down. When it comes to social media, quality traffic comes from sites that attract the most unique visitors. In other words, 6,000 views from 6,000 different people are better than 60,000 from a small core group.   <\/p>\n<p>YouTube statistics show a large number of highly engaged visitors. This is because YouTube focuses on videos, which are visually and audibly appealing. Additionally, YouTube is the most popular social network because it can reach a very broad demographic base. Unlike Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks, YouTube does not restrict access with age requirements and other limitations. Everyone can find something to watch there.    <\/p>\n<p>If you want your website to generate quality traffic, you will need to reach a broad demographic group as well. This is not to say that you cannot have an ideal audience member or group. However, your ideal audience cannot be the only people you reach. Your content must vary enough and be of good quality so that almost all customers will be interested in one type or another.<\/p>\n<h3>Best Practice 2: Pay Attention to Social Referrals<\/h3>\n<p>Social referrals are exactly that, and they occur when users refer each other to sites or brands on social networks. No website starts with hundreds of referrals. Like friendships in real life, they take time to build. That said, you should take advantage of the social referrals you have and tailor content for them.  <\/p>\n<p>Talk to your audience through online surveys, newsletters or emails, or in person to find out what type of content they want to see or the issues they want to address.<\/p>\n<p>Find out what types of content your core audience responds to. If you have a large number of visual people in your audience, focus more on images, videos, and social networking sites like Pinterest or Instagram. If your visitors enjoy reading, you can use blog posts, photos with captions, or sites like Snapchat or Twitter to keep their attention.  <\/p>\n<p>Remember that numbers are not always the most important factor when it comes to social referrals. The Share-a-Holic study, which found that YouTube was so popular, also found that Google+ and LinkedIn received few referrals overall. However, they received higher-quality visitors. Researchers found that visitors spent more than three minutes at a time &#8220;diving&#8221; into topics that interested them.   <\/p>\n<p>This is because LinkedIn and especially Google+ have mastered the art of organizing their topics and data so that users from various niches can always find the information they want. If you organize your content similarly, you will likely generate more social media traffic. <\/p>\n<h3>Best Practice 3: Be Realistic and Cost-Effective<\/h3>\n<p>There is no point in launching a social media strategy that looks great if your resources cannot support it. Many business owners get into trouble because they do exactly that; they plan a content calendar that is too large for their writers and editors to handle, or they promise large amounts of content when their writers can only manage a few posts per week. <\/p>\n<p>It is tempting to want to try all available social media strategies, especially when you are an eager new business owner. Instead, sit down and make a social media plan first. Choose one or two new strategies to try, or think about how to improve or repurpose old strategies that still work.  <\/p>\n<p>Consult with employees and investors to determine where your resources are, as well as whether you can afford more and where to find them. Additionally, ensure that your goals are measurable. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are going to become the leader in online book marketing&#8221; is not measurable because &#8220;leader&#8221; is not defined in numbers.<\/p>\n<p>A clear goal might be:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We are going to generate X number of posts, focused on Y type of content, per week. This will allow us to sell Z number of books by April 2017.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Best Practice 4: Base Your Strategies on Facts and More Than One Fact<\/h3>\n<p>Talking to your audience is a wonderful way to start improving your business. That said, much of what you will hear about your content from a key audience will be based on opinion. You need to ensure that your social media strategies are backed by facts.  <\/p>\n<p>Your team should ideally have marketing experts who are constantly researching trends, content strategies, financial planning, and other factors. Constantly ask these people for updated reports and use what you learn to create the content you need. <\/p>\n<p>Finally, ensure that your marketing team is dedicating equal time to different facets of the business and using best practices in social media marketing.
