The Oscars: a night when social media talks about nothing but the big event. Unsurprisingly, the musical “La La Land” (“City of Stars”) continued its successful run and racked up an impressive 14 Oscar nominations, the most anticipated film awards in Hollywood.
In doing so, it ties the record for the most nominations in the history of the awards, previously achieved by “All About Eve” (1950) and “Titanic” (1997).
The 89th edition of the awards presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the United States will be held next Sunday, February 26, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting the ceremony.
In addition to the musical that has sparked a frenzy across the continent, other films entered the competition.
One of them is “Moonlight” (titled “Luz de luna” in Spanish-speaking countries), which received eight nominations, many of them in the main categories.
With the same number of nominations was “Arrival” (“La llegada”), although without mentions in the acting categories, instead driven by its technical achievements and sound and production design.
With six each, “Lion” (“Un camino a casa”), “Manchester by the Sea” (“Manchester junto al mar”), and “Hacksaw Ridge” (“Hasta el último hombre”) follow, marking Mel Gibson‘s return as a director after years on the sidelines of the film industry.
This was the first time the nominations broadcast was done with a pre-edited video released live online, rather than with two presenters in a theater, as in previous years.
Meanwhile, actress Meryl Streep, who delivered an emotional speech against Donald Trump’s government at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony, received her 20th nomination for her role in the film “Florence Foster Jenkins“.
